On 24 June, 2025, a European online round table discussed “The Role of the Pharmacy Technician: Present and Future” as part of the PharmTech Mobility (Erasmus+) project, aimed at harmonizing training and promoting mobility across Europe.
The event was moderated by María Jesús Aparicio and featured speakers Ismael Escobar, Fernando Cantalapiedra, and Paloma Carpintero.
Isabel Elguero presented the project’s objectives: strengthening cooperation, exchanging best practices, and creating a shared European framework for Pharmacy Technicians.
Speakers emphasised the essential contribution of pharmacy technicians in hospital and community settings, supporting pharmacists and enhancing patient care. Topics included clinical services, medicine preparation, logistics and automation, and the growing importance of communication and empathy.
The panel agreed that the current mid-level qualification does not fully meet future healthcare demands. They proposed advancing education through higher degrees and specialised training.
Lifelong learning was highlighted as a cornerstone for professional development.
International mobility and cross-border collaboration were seen as opportunities for growth and enrichment.
The event reinforced the evolving, increasingly clinical and technical role of Pharmacy Technicians. It also underlined the need for stronger professional recognition and a clear career pathway across Europe.
The discussion marked a key step toward a more unified and prestigious European pharmacy technician profile.
